Annotation: By the early 20th century, the Ruhr began to acquire some of the characteristics of a former industrial region. This development was precipitated by the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine to the German Empire. This territorial expansion expanded the mineral resource base, contributing to the country's economic stability, but simultaneously led to spontaneous (market-driven) integration with the new territories, which resulted in the reduction and distortion of the region's productive potential.
