Annotation: Frontierism is considered a geographic, political and sociocultural condition of territorial systems located on the periphery of nation-state and/or civilizational communities and fulfilling the functions of protecting and transiting people, resources, assets, etc. An increase in the frontier status of regions in Russia's southwestern borderlands is noted due to the growth of geopolitical conflicts. This frontier status typically increases the risks for the development of territorial systems.
